Enterprise 3D Digital Twin Integration and Optimisation
The Challenge
Our large mining client required ongoing support and optimisation of its enterprise 3D digital twin platform to ensure it could reliably scale across a large and diverse user base. With increasing demand from both operational and corporate teams, there was a need to better manage complex spatial data pipelines, improve integration with enterprise systems, and maintain performance at scale.

The Solution
NGIS helped establish a single operating picture of the client’s mining operations within an enterprise-scale 3D environment. Built on the Skyline technology stack, the platform brought together live operational information, enterprise GIS services, engineering data and detailed 3D content within one accessible view across the entirety of the Pilbara.
The solution was designed around flexible integration, allowing information from existing systems such as Esri ArcGIS Enterprise, enterprise databases and other business platforms to be incorporated without replacing established data sources or workflows. This enabled users across the organisation to explore current and authoritative information in its real-world spatial context.
What we delivered
NGIS integrated the 3D platform with the client’s existing GIS and enterprise data environment, using FME and cloud-hosted, Python-based workflows to automate the preparation, transformation and delivery of spatial information. Data could be consumed through standard web services such as WFS, WMTS and ArcGIS feature services, connected directly from databases, or loaded from formats including GeoPackage, Shapefile, SQLite and DXF.
We also developed and maintained the platform’s foundational 3D environment. Orthophotography was combined with digital elevation models to create a detailed base representation of the client’s mining operations, supplemented by high-resolution photogrammetric meshes and BIM content for key infrastructure and operational assets.
Together, these integrations allowed information from environmental, heritage, engineering, exploration, geology, tenure, survey and corporate systems to be visualised within a single 3D environment. NGIS provided ongoing platform optimisation, data management and technical support, while embedding specialist capability within the client’s team through training, knowledge transfer and hands-on collaboration.

Scale & Complexity
The platform supports enterprise-wide use across large, remote operations, with over 1,000 monthly users and high levels of concurrent access. It operates on a multi-terabyte 3D base environment and integrates a wide range of datasets spanning environmental, engineering, geological and corporate functions, alongside detailed 3D infrastructure models.
The Outcome
The engagement resulted in a stable, high-performance 3D digital twin platform capable of supporting enterprise-scale usage. Data pipelines became more efficient and reliable, and integration with enterprise systems was strengthened, ensuring users could access consistent and up-to-date spatial information.
TerraExplorer Sky has become an important platform for helping our teams visualize and understand spatial data in a 3D environment. By bringing together aerial imagery, elevation models, and data from multiple enterprise systems via automated ETL workflows, users can access up-to-date information in a way that’s intuitive and easy to explore.
