Welcome to QGIS Advanced! QGIS is a high impact, global project. QGIS.org provides open access to best-in-class tools for visualising, creating, editing, analysing and publication of spatially linked data and information products. GIS to achieve your goals by learning the program’s fundamentals, including using, making, editing, visualising, and sharing geospatial data.

This one-day training course will build on some of the areas covered in the QGIS Foundations course and will provide participants with more detailed coverage of technical capabilities. At the end of this course participants will be able to use QGIS for advanced operational tasks involving map projections, data modelling and management, advanced analysis, querying and editing.

Please note, the prerequisite to this course is completion of the QGIS Foundations course, or the necessary experience using QGIS. A detailed course description is outlined below.

Exercise 1 – Working with Map Projections

● Understand map projections and coordinate systems
● Specify common Australian coordinates systems
● Set up the correct coordinate system for your project
● Be able to reproject and export your data
● Set up your map canvas in the right projection
● Load a custom projection

Exercise 2 – Data Model Design

● Understand different data types
● Create a new data repository
● Understand the use of Attribute Forms
● Create point features
● Understand the use of domains

Exercise 3 – Advanced Editing

● Create and edit polygon features
● Use domains for attribution
● Use the Advanced Digitizing Toolbar
● Use the Advanced Digitizing Panel tool

Exercise 4 – Advanced Geospatial Analysis

● Create a few queries with the Expression builder
● Use the Extract by location geoprocessing tool
● Use the Select within distance geoprocessing tool
● Use the Buffer geoprocessing tool
● Use the Extract within distance geoprocessing tool

Exercise 5 – Model Designer

● Become familiar with the user interface
● Create a chain of commands using the Model Designer
● Modify the Model Designer
● Execute the Model Designer

Exercise 6 – Raster Image geo-referencing

● Have a basic understanding of georeferencing
● Load and georeference a printed map
● Export the georeferenced image
