In this section you will find general questions relating to the Google Maps Platform.

How does the new licensing work? I find the entire licensing structure confusing.

​I used to be a standard plan customer with billing enabled, but now I am on the Premium Plan. I want a local partner to help me - can I transact through NGIS?

Under the new system I don’t have a clear idea of what my spend is going to be for Google Maps. Can you help me calculate my projected usage?

Service questions

My map has stopped loading, what should I do?

  1. There are several things that need to be in place for your maps queries to return properly, but if the change in the service is recent, you will likely need to ensure that your licence key is properly included in all of your queries to the API. More on that here 
  2. Or Liveli offer a health check service to assess ​- get in touch with them to help you.

I am an existing Premium Plan customer and my bridging licence has expired. What do I have to do now?

As of November 1st, Google have released a transition tool. Your project will unlock automatically under the Google Maps Platform. Contact your account manager for information on how to transition onto the Google Maps Platform. 

​I used to have an internal licence, but now I don’t see that listed. Can I still use the product in a private environment?

Yes. Under the new model there is no distinction between internal, external, OEM and asset tracking all usage is billed in the same manner

Can I switch over to the new licence model now if I’m an existing Premium Plan customer?

You can switch to the new Google Maps Platform model once your existing licence expires. Until then you are still under the same conditions and billing model as when you signed up.

What will happen if I do not have a proper API key in my current platform?

Clients that are not setup properly will start to receive warning messages such as:

  1. Warning message about unsupported version of Google Maps APIs
  2. Base map will be grayed out
  3. No styling
  4. User cannot interact with map.
  5. What will I need to do?

I have multiple licence types under the Premium Plan. What is the best practice to manage them under the Google Maps Platform?

If you have multiple SKUs (for example Maps-INT, Maps-OEM), multiple billing accounts have been created per SKU (that is, Maps-INT and Maps-OEM each have their own separate account). We recommend consolidating these into a single billing account.

Should I stop using my Client ID?

Although Google do not plan to discontinue Client ID usage in the foreseeable future, we recommend that you update your applications to use API key authentication instead of Client ID authentication. The API key offers equivalent functionality, and is fully supported in the console.

How can I monitor my usage under the Google Maps Platform

You can monitor the usage of individual APIs in the Google Cloud Platform Console.

  1. Select the project that contains the API you want to review.
  2. From the list of APIs on the Dashboard, click the name of the API.
  3. Near the top of the page, click Quotas or Usage.To see a traffic report and billing information for an entire project, follow these steps:

  1. Enable billing if you haven't already done so.
  2. Visit the Google Cloud Platform Console billing page.
  3. Select a project.
  4. In the left sidebar, click Reports. Use the filters on the right sidebar to view reports on your billing account.

Does the Google Maps Platform have usage limits?

There are no maximum daily limits on the number of requests you can make to Google Maps Platform products, and the only usage limits are related to the maximum number of "Queries Per Second" (QPS). The following table shows the QPS limit for each API:

  • Directions - 50 QPS
  • Distance Matrix - 1000 EPS
  • Elevation - 100 QPS
  • Geocoding - 50 QPS
  • Geolocation - 100 QPS
  • Dynamic Maps - 500 QPS
  • Static Maps - 500 QPS
  • Street View Image API - 500 QPS
  • Time Zone - 500 QPS
  • Places (Javascript and web) - 50 QPS
  • Roads - 500 QPS

We want to perform testing on our mapping application on the Google Maps Platform before going live. How can we do this?

The Google Maps Platform charges for all usage now. There is no testing environment available for developers.

Google are offering a USD $200 free credit tier each month to assist developers in testing and production. 

You will need to enable billing and implement an API key if you do not wish to receive a "For development purposes only" watermark on your application.

BILLING questions

In this section you will find questions relating to how the billing will be structured under the Google Maps Platform.

In my organisation I can’t use a credit card to purchase Google Maps Platform Premium Plan. Can I still pay by invoice?

Yes, please contact our partner, Liveli and speak to an account manager to work out the amount and frequency of your billing by invoice.

It appears that I can set myself up on the Google Billing Console and deal directly with Google with a credit card. What is the benefit of dealing with a Premium Partner?

Many of our clients prefer to utilise their corporate procurement processes and issue Purchase Orders.

  • NGIS are able to facilitate multiple payment options via our Google Maps Partner - Liveli. Get in touch with Liveli to speak with an account manager to see how they can assist.
  • As a Premium Partner, Liveli may be able to offer its clients certain volume tier discounts.

I have recently started receiving unexpected bills from Google - How can I manage these?

If I have multiple projects under my billing will I still get access to the volume discount billing or will each project be invoiced separately?I

Accessing the partner volume discount tiers works at a sub billing level. Once you have transitioned your licence under a Google Maps Partner, like Liveli, the volume discount tiers will apply to your account automatically, regardless of the number of projects linked to your account.
