Access government-held information through a common user interface

Locate’s aim is to lower the entry barrier for organisations that need to work with spatial data but do not have the capabilities to work with data in a map-based setting. Locate allows community and private sector groups to access government-held information through a common user interface (Google Maps & Earth) and leverage it to support their own outcomes in 2D or 3D maps. Locate’s principal advantage is the supplementation of Google’s base data with other local contextual information.

Governments utilising cloud-based technologies

Not only is it the first time a WA Government agency has utilised cloud-based technologies for core IT delivery, Locate demonstrates how government agencies can partner with IT providers to improve public services through a cost-effective mix of existing investments and contemporary technology. NGIS' services such as Locate can be easily extended and customised for a wide range of organisations. For example, Landgate has worked with the Pilbara Development Commission in Western Australia to create a local version of Locate that is assisting the Development Commission and its partners to understand and address the challenges of high levels of economic growth and rapid change.

The new SLIP (Shared Location Information Platform) will continue to focus on providing a shared platform through which more organisations can share their location information in various forms, customised for different applications, and to deploy simple map viewers to the public that leverage the technology used to deliver the new SLIP – the Google Maps Engine.
