DEA Labs grant unlocks remote sensing power for Agtech

The Australian Government is collaborating with Australian businesses to unlock the value of satellites to help farmers get the most from their land and plan for the future.

Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Matt Canavan announced that NGIS Australia (NGIS), along with two other Australian businesses have been successful in their applications for $50,000 of seed funding to develop projects that will leverage Geoscience Australia’s Digital Earth Australia (DEA) technology.

“From helping to improve decision-making for Australian red meat producers to mapping paddock boundaries and analysing crop data, these innovative projects will give farmers the information they need to make their farms more productive,” Minister Canavan said.

For years, NGIS has been driving innovation in the agricultural sector by delivering solutions that enable farmers to take a data-driven approach to on farm practices.

Executive Director at NGIS, Nathan Eaton, says NGIS is pleased to receive the funding and believes the project will open several doors to help improve operational efficiencies for Australian farmers.

“The availability and use of high-quality data from GA that has been optimised for Australia will improve the data that farmers use for decision making, particularly the GA Fractional Cover product which can provide regular insights for farmers regarding pasture analytics to inform stock management,” said Nathan Eaton, Executive Director at NGIS.

NGIS will leverage the DEA derivative datasets alongside their partner, Decipher.

Anthony Walker, CEO for Decipher says that the fundamental data derivatives provide an opportunity for Decipher to expand its current user base to mixed farming and grazing, complementing the existing user base which includes thousands of end users.

“Initiatives like DEA are critical to pushing the agricultural industry further and play an important role in unlocking the power of remote sensing.

“We are incredibly proud to be a part of this initiative in partnership with NGIS,” he said.
